Activities
Library
We run a selection of activities throughout the school year to encourage reading for pleasure. Please see below for some of the things we’re up to:
In the Autumn Term, all our Year 7 students are given the opportunity to choose a book to take home and keep in association with BookTrust – the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. |
Carnegie Shadowing
During the Spring and early Summer Terms, our County Shadows team ‘shadow’ the judging process for the Yoto Carnegie Medals; we read, discuss and review the books on the shortlist, engage in reading related activity, and vote for our favourites to win the Shadowers’ Choice Awards. |
House Reading
Over 7 weeks in the Summer Term we encourage our students to compete against each other to see which House can borrow and read the most Library books. Last year, almost 1000 books were borrowed, with the winning house reading over a quarter of that total. |

Year 8 Christian Foley
We are fortunate to be part of The ÌÇÐÄSwag Partnership where our aim is to work together for the mutual benefit of all our students and staff regardless of school, situation, or background and encouraging all to engage in opportunities that capture imagination and interest. Our first Partnership event took place at G Live in October 2022 where students had the opportunity to watch a performance by the spoken word artist Christian Foley. Christian’s improvised performances have received critical acclaim. His freestyle approach has taken him from the school classroom to PMQs, from the festival circuit to TED talks and the Premier League. For a day job, he is one of only a few poets in the world selected to complete a ‘Spoken Word Education Programme’ and Teaching MA at Goldsmiths University. He works in several schools and referral units in East London, as Poet in Residence, and is the editor of fourteen poetry anthologies written with children between the ages of four and eighteen.
